About April

Founder and CEO of The Screen Safe Project

Do you wonder what age is best to give your child a smartphone?

Are you overwhelmed about keeping your child safe on social media?

Worry about how much time they spend on a screen but feel too overwhelmed to find a solution?

The majority of parents answer yes to these questions.

And for good reasons. Statistics are showing Mental Health problems in children and teens has reached an all time high.

Screens and social media play a role in those alarming statistics. Scientific research shows screens cause our brains to flood with dopamine similar to a hit of cocaine. That dopamine flood can cause everything from learning delays, to depression, and suicidal ideation.

But with a few actionable steps within the walls of our own homes, we can be proactive with our kids and technology. We can enjoy all the wonderful benefits of technology and also teach our children to have a healthy relationship with technology.

In the past decade as technology and small screen use exploded, the dynamics in my family had changed.

The Screen Safe Project was created from experiences within my own family. In the past decade as technology and small screen use exploded, the dynamics in my family had changed. Not only were my children addicted to screens, so was I. We went through what I refer to as a “digital detox”, and spent 6 months screen free. My family thrived.

We slowly reintroduced screens in healthy amounts, because technology isn’t going anywhere and we all need to learn to have healthy and balanced relationships with technology. Seeing the positive change in my own family fueled my passion to help other families.

It began with Parent Nights, School Assemblies, and Community Events. It has grown into a TEDX Talk, media interviews, and now is becoming a nonprofit organization.

I’m excited to be able to reach more people and help more families. Welcome to The Screen Safe Project!
